Hey Neighbor, Could Dirty Carpet Make You Sick?
Could be…
Recently a major Houston television station aired a report on the dangers lurking in a typical carpet in the home. There findings were, to say the least, revealing. Samples taken from different areas in a home and sent to the lab revealed the presence of bacteria that can cause serious health problems. This information is not new or surprising. For years now, many in the health care industry have warned of the potential threat to health associated with dirty carpet.
The EPA has issued statements concerning the need to provide a safe indoor environment by cleaning the air and the furnishings that contribute to an unhealthy environment.
The biggest culprit has proven to be carpet because of it’s tendency to trap and slowly release dangerous pollutants into the indoor environment. Carpet, especially in high humidity areas, are breeding grounds for strains of bacteria such as Salmonella, Candida, E-coli, and Staphylococcus.
When medical experts were questioned as to what safeguards could reasonably be taken to protect your health, all agreed that cleaning and good sanitary habits were the best.
These included:
1. Vacuuming your carpet and upholstery regularly, although it doesn’t remove or kill bacteria.
2. Truck-Mounted Steam Cleaning on a regular basis kills, removes and controls bacteria growth.
3. Cleaning your heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) system.
By cleaning your air ducts and fans you remove recycled dust, dirt and pollen.
